Oba Femi Ends Brock Lesnar’s Career—Just Like Ultimate Fighting Championship Did

Two Sundays ago at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, a former shot putter born in Lagos retired Brock Lesnar in less than five minutes with a powerbomb. Oba Femi, whose birth name is Isaac Odugbesan, initiated WrestleMania 42 Night 2 by ignoring the F-5, responding with a chokeslam, and concluding the match with a Fall from Grace for an uncontested pinfall. Following the bout, Lesnar removed his gloves and boots, embraced Paul Heyman, and left them in the ring. In professional wrestling terminology, this signifies a retirement.

Femi did not wait for the audience to recover. He seized the microphone and directly challenged Roman Reigns, WWE’s most prominent current attraction, informing fans that Reigns could “get some” before the year concludes.

A strategic framework underlies that moment, and WWE did not originate it. The UFC has employed this approach for six years. Kamaru Usman held the welterweight championship for over three and a half years. Israel Adesanya twice dominated the middleweight division. Between 2019 and 2023, a UFC main event featuring a Nigerian fighter consistently generated significant social media activity in Lagos, Abuja, and every surrounding community. The UFC did not host any events in Nigeria during that period. It did not need to. The fanbase promoted the organization without compensation.

That window is now narrowing. Adesanya has suffered four consecutive losses, most recently by TKO at UFC Seattle in March. Usman has not held a title since 2022 and experienced a four-year gap between victories. The UFC’s Nigerian wave is approaching its end. At precisely this moment, a different American sports entertainment company features a Nigerian heavyweight gaining viral attention on Nigerian X.

Femi’s entry into WWE was not a matter of chance. The organization signed him in 2021 through its Next In Line program, a talent pipeline designed to transform American college athletes into professional wrestlers. He was attending the University of Alabama on a shot put scholarship, having transferred from Middle Tennessee State University. The tryout opportunity arose after WWE’s recruitment team contacted him via an Instagram direct message. He had no prior wrestling experience. Standing six feet six inches tall and weighing over three hundred pounds, he had recently earned a degree in visual arts and was prepared to enter the industry.

Within three years of signing, he became the longest-reigning NXT North American Champion in the title’s history. Within five years, he achieved victory at WrestleMania. CNN’s Larry Madowo interviewed him at WWE headquarters four days before his match against Lesnar, and the interview was published globally with WWE’s approval. The company is fully aware of the asset it possesses.

Whether Femi will become a main-event star is already a foregone conclusion. The more pertinent question for the Nigerian audience is whether WWE will ever host a Premium Live Event on the continent that initially made Femi marketable. Every other major market has hosted such an event. Saudi Arabia receives two annually. The United Kingdom has held stadium shows at Wembley and the Principality Stadium. Australia, Germany, France, and Puerto Rico have all been included. Africa has never hosted a PLE.

In 2024, Femi stated his desire to change this and acknowledged that he needed to establish credibility before raising the matter with Triple H. That credibility was achieved on Sunday.

The Afrobeats narrative continues to evolve. Burna Boy performed as a headliner at Madison Square Garden before ever headlining a purpose-built arena in Lagos, as such a venue does not exist in the city. Wizkid’s track “Essence” only entered the top ten in the United States following a remix featuring Justin Bieber. African cultural and athletic productions are often extracted, refined overseas, and then marketed back to the diaspora and local audiences via international platforms. Nigerian audiences generate substantial viewership, which global corporations recognize, yet the corresponding infrastructure remains undeveloped.

At twenty-seven years of age, Oba Femi has his peak years ahead of him. Should WWE follow the established industry playbook, he will likely hold a championship, generate merchandise sales, attract millions of Nigerian streaming viewers, and perform in stadium events in Riyadh, London, and New Jersey. The company will rationalize this as serving the African market by featuring a Nigerian talent on global television.

WWE now possesses its Nigerian main-event star. What Nigeria will ultimately receive from this arrangement, however, remains an unresolved question.
