Nigeria will face Cameroon in the Women’s AFCON quarter-finals.

The Nigerian women’s national football team, affectionately known as the Super Falcons, has successfully navigated the group stages of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations and earned a coveted spot in the tournament’s knockout phase. Their impressive performance has set the stage for a highly anticipated quarter-final clash against a well-known continental rival, Cameroon. This crucial encounter is scheduled to take place following the conclusion of the group matches on Wednesday.Nigeria secured their progression by finishing as the runners-up in Group C, a position cemented after their final group fixture. The Super Falcons concluded their group campaign on a high note, delivering a dominant 6-2 victory over Egypt.

This triumph brought their total points in the group to six, placing them level with Malawi and Zambia. However, the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) competition regulations introduced a layer of complexity to the final standings. Specifically, only the results from matches involving Nigeria, Malawi, and Zambia were considered for head-to-head comparisons. This tie-breaking mechanism ultimately saw Malawi emerge as the group winners, advancing with a superior head-to-head record, while Zambia was unfortunately eliminated from contention. The established quarter-final pairing is a direct consequence of CAF’s meticulously designed fixed knockout bracket structure. This pre-determined system dictates that the runner-up of Group C will face the winner of Group D. In Group D, Cameroon demonstrated their prowess by clinching the top spot.

Their path to this achievement included a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Mali and a subsequent 1-0 triumph against Ghana. Ghana, in turn, secured their advancement to the knockout stage as the group’s second-place finisher, having earned their spot despite their decisive head-to-head defeat to the Cameroonian side. The final positioning within Group D for Mali remains to be definitively determined. Their fate will be decided by the outcome of their upcoming fixture against Ghana, scheduled for Thursday.
