Mudryk is cleared to play for Chelsea following a nearly two-year doping investigation.

After a protracted legal battle spanning nearly two years, Chelsea’s dynamic winger, Mykhailo Mudryk, has been granted permission to resume his professional football career.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has significantly reduced a previously imposed four-year ban, allowing the Ukrainian international to return to competitive action immediately. This ruling brings an end to a challenging period that saw the 25-year-old sidelined since late 2024.

The initial suspension stemmed from an adverse doping test for meldonium, a prohibited substance, which occurred while Mudryk was representing his country. The Football Association (FA) provisionally suspended him following this incident.

Although the FA subsequently handed down the maximum four-year ban, CAS’s recent decision offers a substantial reprieve. In their ruling, CAS acknowledged that Mudryk had indeed breached anti-doping regulations. However, the court also recognized a crucial nuance: the concentration of meldonium detected in his sample was remarkably low.

Furthermore, the CAS highlighted that advancements in the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) technical reporting standards mean that such a trace amount would not even be flagged as a positive test under current protocols. “Had Mudryk’s test been conducted today then the concentration of meldonium in the sample would not have been reported and no adverse finding would have been recorded,” the CAS statement, as reported by BBC Sport, explained.

This critical finding paved the way for a resolution. The FA and Mudryk, with the full agreement of WADA, subsequently settled the appeal proceedings. This amicable resolution means Mudryk can now immediately re-engage with his footballing duties.Chelsea Football Club has expressed their delight at the news, emphasizing their eagerness to reintegrate Mudryk into the first-team setup.

“We look forward to getting Misha back to full fitness, back into the squad and back on to the pitch,” the club stated in an official release, signaling their full support for the player’s return.Mudryk is anticipated to join Chelsea’s pre-season preparations, potentially participating in their tour of Hong Kong.

This marks the beginning of his much-anticipated comeback under the guidance of manager Xabi Alonso. Throughout this arduous process, Mudryk has consistently maintained his innocence, asserting that he never knowingly or intentionally ingested any prohibited substances and remains unaware of how trace amounts of meldonium entered his system.
