Military Base Attack in Borno Claims Life of Senior Officer Major U.I Mairiga, Several Troops

Fighters from the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) raided a military barracks in Borno State on Sunday, killing a senior Nigerian Army officer.

According to military reports, Major U.I. Mairiga, the commanding officer at the Kajeri Forward Operating Base, was killed during the attack, which started around four in the morning. The Banki junction, a busy crossing on the Bama-Gwoza Road, is where the base is situated.

Many ISWAP fighters engaged forces in a violent gunfight during the attack. The attackers arrived with superior weapons and were able to overrun portions of the base in the early stages of the combat, according to security personnel who talked about the incident. Some soldiers had to retreat and seek shelter in the surrounding bushes in order to regroup during the ensuing pandemonium.

Major Mairiga was confirmed deceased, along with a number of other soldiers. Although the precise number of casualties has not been made public, reports on the ground reported that both sides suffered significant losses, with many rebels also thought to have died in the conflict.

The remains of Major Mairiga and the other fallen soldiers were transferred to the 7 Division Military Hospital in Maiduguri once the fighting subsided. As commanders and coworkers processed the day’s events, the bodies were taken to the hospital mortuary.

Because it links the towns of Bama, Banki, and Gwoza, the Banki junction is strategically important to the military. Troops and supplies frequently pass through the area. One of the more direct and lethal attacks on a stationary military formation in the area in recent weeks occurred on Sunday.

The spokesperson for the Nigerian Army had not yet released a formal statement about the incident as of the time of this article. However, according to military sources, troops in the region have been put on high alert, and reinforcements have been sent in to block the main road connecting the three towns and stop the terrorists from moving farther.

The assault coincides with the military’s efforts to drive rebels out of strategic Northeastern locations. The risks that soldiers experience on a regular basis in the theater of operation are brought to light by the loss of a commanding officer in such a close-quarters battle.
