Lagos champions APC-friendly legislative picks for 2027

The Lagos State Government has made a significant commitment to fostering a vibrant political landscape by pledging its support for legislative aspirants who are not only capable of clearly articulating the ambitious agenda of the All Progressives Congress (APC) but are also aligned with its core values. This initiative comes alongside an exciting proposal to establish a state-backed airline, an endeavor that aims to bolster economic reforms and propel the state towards increased prosperity.

These key decisions were articulated in a comprehensive communiqué that emerged from the 19th executive and legislative parley. This three-day conference, convened by the Office of Political, Legislative, and Civic Engagement, took place at the prestigious Eko Hotels and Suites, bringing together influential figures such as Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, lawmakers, party leaders, and senior government officials.

The forum was centered around the pivotal theme of strengthening collaboration across the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of government. Among the resolutions highlighted during the parley, a significant emphasis was placed on the importance of endorsing only those candidates for legislative positions—both at the state and national levels—who can effectively and coherently express the visions and strategies of the APC.

Additionally, the participants underscored the urgency of expediting the plans for establishing a state airline, capturing the sentiment that, “The state government should act swiftly on the proposed establishment of a Lagos airline to significantly enhance the economic prosperity of the state.” This initiative reflects a proactive approach to economic development, indicative of the government’s commitment to improving the quality of life for its citizens.

Crucially, the meeting accentuated the necessity for stronger institutional alignment among the three arms of government. The resolution stated, “The three arms of government should deepen their harmonious working relationship through collaboration, cooperation, coordination, communication, and consensus.” This call for unity aims to ensure that all branches work synergistically toward the common goal of advancing the interests of Lagos State.

The communiqué also highlights the vital need for structured engagement between government institutions and party organizations to boost grassroots inclusion. Participants expressed the belief that robust engagement strategies should be set in place, stating, “There is a need to ensure structured engagement between the state government and party structures to facilitate grassroots participatory decision-making and shared growth.” This inclusive approach will help bridge the gap between the government and the communities it serves.

In terms of governance processes, the parley underscored the importance of early coordination between the executive and legislative bodies. The communiqué stated, “The executive must ensure the practice of early engagement with the legislature on the appropriation process (budget),” while also encouraging ongoing dialogue about policy proposals to ensure transparency and effective communication.

Furthermore, the resolution emphasized the need for unified direction among the three arms of government to minimize duplication and inefficiency, leading to enhanced communication that could spur development. To this end, it proposed regularized institutional reforms, advocating for systematic joint meetings between state executives and lawmakers.

The communiqué further asserted, “There should be an institutionalized quarterly meeting between the executive, members of the National Assembly representing Lagos State, and members of the Lagos State House of Assembly to review national-level engagements, align priorities, assess performance, and chart a path forward.” This proposal aims to create a continuous feedback loop that ensures all parties are working towards aligned goals.

As the state gears up for the pivotal 2027 general elections, stakeholders emphasized the importance of strengthening political cohesion. They called for closer collaboration between party structures and the government, additionally prioritizing strategies to increase voter mobilization efforts. The communiqué succinctly stated, “The state government, party structures (state, local government areas, and ward), and elected representatives should ensure intensified voter mobilization and awareness for continuous voter registration, thereby strengthening democratic participation.

”Officials have indicated that the outcomes of this parley reflect a concerted effort to align governance practices, party strategies, and economic planning as the state embarks on preparations for the upcoming electoral cycle. The commitment to transparency, collaboration, and grassroots inclusion is poised to set the stage for a flourishing democratic process in Lagos State.
