Veteran Nollywood actor and filmmaker Gabriel Afolayan has offered a candid perspective on the persistent discord within the celebrated Nigerian music duo P-Square and their elder brother, Jude Okoye. Afolayan’s insights reveal that the familial strife, which has become a subject of public speculation, is not a recent development but rather a deeply entrenched issue that has simmered for a considerable duration, extending far beyond what the public has perceived.
His commentary stems from personal observations made during the formative years of Peter and Paul Okoye’s illustrious music careers. Afolayan vividly recalls witnessing friction between the twin brothers as early as 2005, a period when P-Square was actively engaged in the creation of their debut album, “Get Squared.” These observations were made at the renowned EKO Reelmix Studio in Lagos.
According to Afolayan, a consistent point of contention among the brothers revolved around the artistic curation of their albums. He explained that significant disagreements would often arise concerning the selection of songs, with each brother advocating for the prominence of their own compositions on the final tracklist. During this era, Jude Okoye, who served as the group’s manager, frequently assumed the pivotal role of arbiter, ultimately deciding which tracks would make the cut for their releases.
Taking to social media to share his recollections, Afolayan emphasized the historical nature of these conflicts. He stated, “The Psquare story that I know dated back to 2005 get squared era at EKO reelmix studio. They’ve always had issues with songs selection for any album they intend to release. Argument on whose songs should be picked more and Jude has always been a decider of that. This fight don tey no be today. All through their prime era.”
Furthermore, Afolayan alluded to other underlying issues that have contributed to the strained relationship between the brothers, subtly referencing matters connected to their respective marriages. However, he refrained from divulging specific details regarding these personal aspects of their lives.
