Enugu stops collecting tolls from underprivileged vendors

Toll collection from small-scale vendors was immediately halted by the Enugu state administration on Tuesday.

Consequently, a team has been established to guarantee that the government’s instruction to halt the N200 daily toll from vendors of vegetables, pure water, and hawkers is immediately implemented.

Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, the secretary to the Enugu State Government (SSG), made this announcement on Tuesday during a stakeholders meeting at the Old Government Lodge in Enugu. He stated that the government had received complaints regarding the detrimental impact the tolls were having on the poor traders from traditional rulers, local government chairmen, and president generals.

Onyia went on to say that the administration was forced to halt the tolls due to the public outcry.

Our markets’ revenue has drawn a lot of attention, and the governor has issued an urgent mandate to implement it. At the local government levels, a taskforce will be established. Tolls collected from vendors without lock-up stores are referred to as market tolls. This is N200 a day.

“The governor has ordered that the tolls be suspended immediately in accordance with the Enugu State Tax Law. The governor suspended it after we received complaints from the Igwe people, local government mayors, and president generals,” he stated.
