In a report published by TheCable Newspaper on Friday, August 7, 2026, it was revealed that Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice-President and presidential candidate for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has expressed significant apprehension regarding an unsolicited and peculiar financial transaction. A sum of money was deposited into one of his personal bank accounts by an unidentified individual, with the transaction reference explicitly stating “Contribution Electioneering Campaign.” This occurred despite the fact that neither Mr. Abubakar nor his campaign apparatus had initiated, requested, or authorized any such contribution.
The development has been characterized by Mr. Abubakar’s team as a matter of grave concern, primarily because the account in question is a private one, the details of which are not publicly accessible. Consequently, the incident has ignited serious questions about the methods by which unknown parties managed to obtain Mr. Abubakar’s sensitive banking information. In response to this breach of privacy, the former Vice-President has formally alerted security agencies to the situation. This proactive measure stems from apprehensions surrounding the potential exploitation of private financial data, particularly in the lead-up to the crucial 2027 general elections.
According to a statement released by Phrank Shaibu, Atiku’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, the unauthorized deposit was entirely unknown to Mr. Abubakar, his campaign organization, or any of his close aides prior to its execution. Mr. Abubakar himself issued a stern warning, emphasizing the broader implications of this incident for the financial security of all Nigerians should private banking information be susceptible to unauthorized access and utilization. He articulated his concern by stating, “If the private banking information of a former Vice President and a leading presidential candidate can be accessed and deployed for reasons yet unknown, then no Nigerian’s financial privacy is safe.” This statement underscores the profound vulnerability that such breaches expose, suggesting that the personal financial security of every citizen could be at risk.
