According to a report published by GOAL on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, a wave of criticism has been directed at new Arsenal goalkeeper Illan Meslier following his decision to join the reigning Premier League champions. Meslier, a French international, secured a free transfer to Arsenal this summer, concluding a six-year tenure at Leeds United where he amassed an impressive 215 appearances.
However, former Arsenal custodian Graham Stack has voiced his strong reservations, positing that Meslier has made a detrimental career choice by accepting what could be a third-choice role at the Emirates Stadium.Meslier’s arrival at Mikel Arteta’s squad was ostensibly to bolster competition and provide valuable experience behind established goalkeepers David Raya and Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Yet, with these two prominent figures ahead of him in the current hierarchy, Stack has openly questioned the rationale behind a goalkeeper with substantial Premier League experience opting for a situation where securing regular first-team football is likely to be a significant challenge. In an interview with Metro, Stack articulated his astonishment at Meslier’s move and cast doubt on whether the Frenchman still possesses the same burning ambition for consistent playing time.
“I question him, I really do question the goalkeeper,” Stack remarked, emphasizing his skepticism. The seasoned former Arsenal goalkeeper highlighted Meslier’s proven track record in English football, suggesting that the 26-year-old should still be actively pursuing opportunities for regular starts rather than settling for a backup position. Instead of being the undisputed number one, Meslier now faces the prospect of competing for limited opportunities behind Raya and Kepa, thereby making consistent Premier League appearances a far more uncertain prospect.
