Stocks Rally, Oil Extends Losses As Trump Fans Fresh Peace Hopes

Stocks rallied across global markets on Wednesday as fresh optimism emerged over possible peace talks between the United States and Iran, with President Donald Trump hinting that a new round of negotiations could begin within the next two days.

Traders welcomed the development, which raised hopes that a diplomatic solution could soon reopen the Strait of Hormuz and restore the smooth flow of crude oil through one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints.

The positive sentiment was further boosted by news that Israel and Lebanon have agreed to begin direct negotiations following talks in Washington. This marks a significant and rare diplomatic step between two nations that have been locked in conflict for decades.

Despite the United States maintaining its blockade on Iranian ports after the collapse of earlier talks in Islamabad, President Trump told reporters that he remains hopeful about resuming dialogue in the coming days.

“You should stay there, really, because something could be happening over the next two days, and we’re more inclined to go there,” Trump was quoted as saying during a phone interview.

Senior sources in Pakistan indicated that the country is actively working behind the scenes to bring both sides back to the negotiating table, with efforts focused on extending the current fragile two-week ceasefire.

The comments from the US President provided a strong boost to financial markets, which have been volatile due to the six-week conflict that has sent shockwaves through the global economy.

Wall Street indices posted solid gains, with the Nasdaq and S&P 500 climbing back well above pre-war levels and approaching record highs once again. Asian markets followed suit on Wednesday, showing broad-based gains.

Seoul’s Kospi index stood out as one of the strongest performers, jumping nearly three percent and moving closer to its all-time high. Other major indices in Tokyo, Hong Kong, Sydney, Taipei, Singapore, and Manila also recorded healthy increases.

Analysts noted that continued diplomatic pressure combined with hopes for renewed talks has helped ease some of the tension in energy markets. A credible path toward peace could quickly restore investor confidence and support riskier assets.

However, some experts remain cautious. While an end to the conflict would be widely welcomed, questions linger about the shape of any final peace agreement and how quickly oil production could return to full capacity.

The International Monetary Fund added to the uncertainty on Tuesday by cutting its global growth forecast for 2026. The Fund now projects world economic expansion at just 3.1 percent, down from the previous estimate of 3.3 percent.

IMF Chief Economist Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas stated that without the impact of the ongoing war, the organization had planned to raise its 2026 forecast to 3.4 percent. The conflict has clearly thrown global economic projections off course.

Economists from major banks also weighed in. National Australia Bank’s Taylor Nugent noted that markets appear to be looking beyond the immediate physical disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz toward the possibility of successful talks. This has supported risk assets, pushed Treasury yields lower, and weakened the US dollar slightly.

Charu Chanana, Chief Investment Strategist at Saxo, added that if diplomacy gains further momentum, markets could recover confidence rapidly. However, she warned that any return to conflict could lead to a broader and more dangerous phase than investors had anticipated.

As developments in the Middle East continue to unfold, global investors and policymakers remain on high alert, closely monitoring how these delicate diplomatic efforts will affect energy prices, supply chains, and overall economic stability in the months ahead.
