Odinkalu Reacts As Popular Traditionalist Akwa Okuko Was Sentenced To 11 Months Under Plea Bargain

Chidi Odinkalu is a prominent human rights activist. He is also a former chairman of the National Human Rights Commission. He has publicly commented on the recent sentencing of the popular traditionalist Chiedozie Nwangwu. Chiedozie Nwangwu is also widely known as Akwa Okuko.

Odinkalu took to his official X account to give insights on the case. He revealed that the judgment issued by the Federal High Court in Anambra State will not be appealed. The sentencing, which has generated widespread attention online, saw Nwangwu handed an eleven-month prison term after a plea bargain arrangement. The traditionalist was found guilty of engaging in illegal practices. Nevertheless, the specifics of the charges have not diminished the public’s curiosity. Reaction to the case remains strong. Social media platforms quickly became the arena for heated discussions, with opinions divided on the appropriateness of the sentence. Odinkalu stated that the court reduced the sentence. This reduction was a direct result of legal negotiations by Nwangwu’s counsel. “The sentence is significant. It reflects the outcome of a plea bargain. The judgment will stand as delivered,” Odinkalu explained. He emphasized that there will be no appeal filed against the verdict.

Odinkalu also provided further context about the traditionalist’s post-prison obligations.

Nwangwu is expected to engage in community service. This is according to the human rights lawyer. He will start this after completing his prison term in 2027. This arrangement aims to guarantee that the sentence serves a punitive purpose. It also contributes positively to the wider society. The case has sparked national debate. People are discussing the balance between traditional practices and legal accountability. There is also debate about the justice system’s handling of plea bargains. Some members of the public have expressed disappointment over the conviction. Others have acknowledged the court’s approach as a demonstration of due process. They see it as a negotiation in the judicial system.
