In a captivating report released by the Daily Post on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, former Chelsea and Super Eagles midfielder John Obi Mikel has boldly predicted that Arsenal will successfully defend their Premier League title this season.
He has characterized Mikel Arteta’s squad as the most formidable team as they prepare to embark on a fresh campaign. This assertion comes on the heels of Arsenal’s monumental achievement in ending a 22-year title drought by clinching the league crown during the thrilling 2025/26 season. Following that remarkable victory, expectations are high, and the Gunners are once again viewed as leading contenders to lift the coveted trophy this year.
During a recent episode of his engaging ObiOne podcast, Mikel shared his thoughts on the upcoming season, stating that the combination of stability and continuity under Arteta gives Arsenal a significant advantage over their competitors. “When discussing the teams to beat in the league, the list is extensive,” he commented. “However, one thing we can confidently say is that the playing field is incredibly open, with the exception of Arsenal. If we are honest, Arsenal stands apart as a team in a league of its own right now.”The former Chelsea star went on to praise Arsenal’s strategy of gradually building a cohesive and settled squad over the years, emphasizing that the club has finally shattered the barrier that previously prevented them from converting strong performances into actual silverware. “They are no longer just strong runners in the league; they are winners.
Their commitment to nurturing talent and teamwork has paid off, culminating in that long-awaited victory,” he elaborated.Mikel further noted that Arsenal’s league triumph has not only revitalized the team but has also bolstered their confidence as they gear up to defend their title. He recognizes that this season’s championship race could be intensely competitive, with many clubs eager to make their mark. Nevertheless, he remains steadfast in his belief that Arsenal has established itself as the benchmark for excellence following their impressive success last season. As fans eagerly anticipate the matches to come, one thing is clear: the story of Arsenal’s journey could unfold in a truly thrilling manner, and as Mikel suggests, they are very much the ones to watch as the new season kicks off!
